  • The Horsefield tortoise is also known as the Russian tortoise or Central Asian tortoise.  Adult Horsefield tortoises are small in size and range from 13 to 25 cm in length which is equal to around 5 to 10 inches. The average lifespan of a Horsefield tortoise is around 60 years. It can live even longer if it is given proper diet and kept in soothing environment.

They are active in the daytime and benefit from a large amount of space to explore and exercise.  Tortoises can be outside during the warm hours in the summer months in the UK, but their outdoor environment needs careful preparation, and you will need to research this before this is done.

The natural cycle of a Horsefield tortoise in the wild is to hibernate for months during the wintertime. In captivity, there is a debate and not everyone hibernates their tortoise.  Seek advice from your veterinary practitioner to help you make an informed decision about whether or not to hibernate your tortoise.

Tortoises are a territorial species and it is safer to keep them alone to prevent fighting, injury and stress.
